Stuttgart Saturday – One of the greatest race cars of all time – the Porsche 962 chassis CK6-88 @CastleClassics 2019 owned by Martin Overington.
This is one of the first CK6’s built by Kremer (of a total of 11) in 1988 for the Le Mans 24 Hours with a low downforce body identical to the factory Porsche works cars. Entered by Kenwood Kremer Racing, qualifying 21st, it finished 9th driven by Kunimitsu Takahashi, Hideki Okada ex F1 driver Bruno Giacomelli.
Kremer constructed their cars differently to Porsche – instead of the aluminium sheet tub chassis, Kremer used a TC Prototypes Ltd “Thompson” chassis which was reputedly stronger, stiffer, being an aluminium-honeycomb monocoque chassis. This had greater rigidity and was therefore much safer.
The car was raced throughout 1988 in the FIA World Sports Prototype Championship and the FIA Interserie Championship. For the 6 round 1988 Coupe d’Europe series it raced with a bespoke Kremer rear wing which is still on the car. Danish driver Kris Nissen took wins at Hockenheim and Wunstorf and a 9th place at the Hungaroring. He did not compete in the other three rounds, but had done enough to win the Championship.
In a season finale, the 1988 World Challenge held at Tampa Bay, Florida, the car was driven by racing legend Mario Andretti and multiple CART Champion son, Michael. They finished 6th - two other 962’s finished second and third.
In June 2012 another racing legend, Derek Bell, drove the car at Le Mans in a Group C race – a support race to the main 24 Hour race. This was 20 years after he last drove a Porsche 962 at Le Mans – on that occasion with son Justin and Tiff Needell.
