All Porsches are special....but some models have just that little bit extra....and the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 that was launched in 1973 is one of those that has achieved iconic status and is now very much sought after.....and valuable.

RS stands for Rennsport in German which translates as “race sport”. The Carrera name was re-introduced from the 356 Carrera which had itself been named after Porsche's class victories in the Carrera Panamericana races in Mexico in the ‘50s.

The Carrera RS was designed for motorsport homolgation purposes – FIA Group 4 – at least 500 had to be produced. The car benefitted from a larger engine of 2,687cc over the 911S, parts of the body were constructed using thinner steel and also thinner glass – more power, less weight. A total of 1,580 cars were built during 1973 and 1974, 49 fitted with a larger 2,808cc engine. Performance figures of 0-60 5.6s / top speed of 150mph.

For the inaugural 1974 season of the International Race of Champions (IROC) Championship in North America, a 3 litre engine was fitted, wider wheel arches and a “whale tail” spoiler were added – this was known as the RSR. The RSR achieved many wins during the mid ‘70’s and a prototype Turbo RSR finished second in the ’74 LeMans race – fitted with a 2.1 litre engine.

This video features professional racing driver and journalist Sam Hancock behind the wheel of a 2.7 in what looks like quite atrocious conditions....on spectacular roads....that gives the viewer a little taste of what makes this car special.
