For those not familiar with Harry Metcalfe, he was the founder and editor of Evo magazine. He now has his own YouTube channel, “Harrys Garage”, and his very informative road tests make for great viewing.
In 2019, he road tested a Porsche 911 Carrera Club Sport, which at the time was up for sale – 57,000 miles, full service history, for £150,000. Harry posed the question – is this the best driving classic 911? The car was launched in 1987, powered by a 3.2 litre engine developing 246hp with the 5 speed G50 gearbox. The main difference between the CS and the standard Carrera, was a weight saving exercise – it is 50 kilos less than the standard car. It was rumoured that the engine had undergone some improvements too, although Porsche have never confirmed that. The CS really is a bit of a unicorn – only 340 were produced of which 53 were RHD. The majority were also white. Performance figures were quoted as 0-60 in 5.1 seconds with a top speed of 151 mph. The list price was £34,389 against the standard cars £37,320.
The CS can be regarded as the spiritual successor to the much sought after 1973 2.7 Carrera RS of which 1590 were produced. Watch this great video to hear Harry’s conclusion – the best 911 ever and a hidden gem?
