Another great day of hillclimbing at the Wiscombe Park MG Car Club meeting on the 11th September 2021. The weather god’s were kind again, and the sun shone brightly.
The morning practice run and first timed run produced a few surprises for some driver’s when they found that the upper reaches of the hill were deceptively greasy – Martini in the morning provided particularly spectacular viewing. Tony Wiltshire had to brake heavily when his beautiful Ralt RT34 was not going to go around Martini despite the recent new rubber....he hit the bank on the outside, but fortunately ony re-aligned one of the frong wings....”I wasn’t even going fast!” he exclaimed as the marshal’s came to assist. The always rapid Stephen Wareham in his Morris Mini was another to have a little shake...or maybe it was a stir...at Martini....as he entered the hairpin in a lurid, sideways slide....but avoided contact with the scenery.
Wiscombe was hosting rounds of a number of National Championships - MG Speed Championship, Revington TR Register, Lotus 7 Speed Championship, Classic Marques Speed Challenge, and Downton Speed Championship. The event was also another round of the Wiscombe Tillicoultry Quarries Championship.
The single seaters are always the fastest cars, and it was again Ed Hollier – Pilbeam MP62 and Andrew Forsyth – OMS CF04 battling for FTD – both in Class E2. Ed did the “double” at last weekend’s Five Clubs meeting, but today it was Andrew Forsyth who came out on top with a 36.44s run – Ed’s best was a 36.60s.
In Class E3, Tony Wiltshire set a 36.77s putting his morning woes behind him and third overall. There were a number of driver’s achieving PB’s including DEWS runners John Hill, Rob Still and Stuart Lugger – who won the Class with his 44.80s run. In the single seater Class E2, Andrew Mathis continued his great run of form with a PB 38.57s.
In Class E1, Wiscombe expert, and current leader of the ASWMC Hillclimb Championship, Ben Bonfield – Jedi Mk4 - finished his day with a 37.69s to win the Class from Paul Crocker – Jedi Mk1 – on 39.98s. Ben was 4th quickest overall followed home by Andrew Mathis and Rod Thorne in his thunderous Pilbeam Rover MP43.
The day also saw some new record’s - in Class 7 MG Speed Championship, Ben Rolls in his rapid Austin Healey Sprite with a 44.54s run, and the current leader of the Wiscombe Park Tillicoultry Quarries Championship, Rod Eyles – Alfa Romeo 4C, set a new Class A3 record of 42.18s.

The last Wiscombe meeting of the year, the Wildlife Autosport, will be held on the 25th and 26th September.
