It is congratulations to Wiscombe Park regular Ben Bonfield who is this year’s TyreMarks ASWMC Hillclimb Champion.
This continues a great run for Ben – he won the ASWMC Sprint Championship in 2020. It has been a perfect year – There has been 10 rounds – all except for the 2 rounds which were at Werrington Park, Launceston in May – all the others have been at Wiscombe. Drivers count their best 7 results. For Ben, that was 7 record breaking runs – a perfect score!
His car – the Jedi Mk4 - an ex circuit, works race car that was used by Jedi founder John Corbyn, had a new engine fitted over the winter, and Ben has put it to very good use. He is also running on rubber that is three years old....what times will he be setting in 2022 with new rubber?
Ben told me recently, that when he was watching his dad, Tony, with whom he shares the Jedi, competing at Finlake many years ago, he said “I am going to win that Championship one day”. Well that’s one ambition ticked off the bucket list!
I am sure Ben will be the first to admit that it has been a highly competitive year and he was pushed hard by Rod Eyles, Steve Wareham and Tony Wiltshire. The highly experienced, and winner of numerous British speed Championships over the last 40 years, Rod Eyles also scored a maximum 7 record breaking runs in the stunning Alfa Romeo 4C. It was a very close and intense battle.
Rod of course was announced yesterday as the Winner of the Tillicoultry Quarries Wiscombe Park Championship with Ben finishing 6th.
Ben has plans over the winter for the car......he mentioned to me a new floor....and exploring the car’s aero....it has already sprouted some barge boards this year which assist with air flow around the car. We look forward to following Ben’s progress in 2022 – congratulations Champion on a fantastic year!
