At the weekend Torquay welcomed the OCRDA Aqua Adrenaline Tour for two days of actioned packed power boat and jet ski racing. The weather conditions were perfect as the Bay was bathed in glorious sunshine and 21 boats and 14 jet ski’s prepared to do battle for honour’s out on the waves.
Race one of Round 5 of the OCRDA Championship provided one of the closest finishes ever when Smokey & The Bandit – Jeremy Gibson / Malachy Browne caught Banshee Racing Team – Max Walker / Jerry Wills napping and pipped them to first place in the Formula 1 Class – the margin...2 seconds! Jeremy and Malachy, the Championship leaders, made it the perfect start to the weekend by also winning Race 2.
There was plenty of frantic action with close racing amongst the jet ski riders and a great display by Ryan Campbell on his flyboard giving the big crowd plenty of thrills.
On Sunday the sun again blazed down, but deceptively, the sea was quite rough. Imagine driving fast over speed bumps....this is what the racers had to contend with! Racing commenced later in the day as the power boats competing in the famous Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race blasted across the Bay on their non stop race, this year celebrating its 60th Anniversary.

The changed sea conditions were perfect for If Only - Bob McCarthy / James Goldsmith to do the “double” and win both Formula 1 races. In the Formula 2 Class it was a weekend long battle between Fatboy Twin – Andy Childs / Mark Hayward and 66 Racing – father and son duo Malc Dopson / Bradley Dopson.
The Concours Award went to Cornish racers Justin Copland and Josh Lovelock in Jam First. This is their rookie season in the sport and on Saturday they suffered some damage to the hull of their boat. They completed over night repairs and were out again racing on Sunday!
Sunday was rounded off with the prize giving ceremony on the harbour side. The action now moves on to Caernarfon in a couple of weeks with Jeremy Gibson and Malachy Brown starting to look like the favourites to lift the 2021 F1 Class Championship.
